If
you have substantial capital to invest and are interested
in a relatively safe return on your
investment, (as long as the sun continues to shine), then ownership of
part or all of
a solar generation system may be for
you. Ownerhip today in a solar electric system can be expected to
provide an after tax
return to the owner of at least 8%.
Pre-tax, the return is usually in the 12% to 15% range. That return
assumes the solar
system is a commercial or industrial
size system.
Until
the passage of the economic Stimulus bill on February 17, 2009,
investors in a solar generation system needed to be
able to fully utilize the 30% solar
Investment Tax Credit as well as five year accelerated depreciation to
achieve a desirable
after tax return. The Stimulus bill
signed by President Obama now provides solar system owners with a new
option: receiving
a grant from the Treasury of 30% of
the installed cost of the solar system in lieu of taking advantage of
the 30% solar ITC.
This option now makes ownership of a
solar system available to more investors because the principal tax
benefit that needs
to be utilized is only the
depreciation of the system cost.
